Recently, there has been an increase in high-cost communication incidents on vessels equipped with Inmarsat Fleet77. Please take note of the following risks associated with F77:
1.Lack of Filter Function in Communication Equipment:
This allows unrestricted web access when directly connected to a PC.
2.High Costs When Using ISDN Connection by Mistake:
Incorrect use can result in communication charges of USD 15-20 per minute.
Leaving it connected, thinking it’s MPDS, can result in over USD 20,000 in charges per day.
3.High Charges When Changing Ground Stations by Mistake:
This can lead to charges 3-10 times higher than normal rates.
We particularly urge you to pay attention to point (2). With the proliferation of FBB, captains often assume that data connections should remain active, increasing the risk of the above-mentioned issue.
Additionally, please note that the MPDS service for F77 will end at the end of this year, leaving only ISDN communication available.
Due to these factors, using F77 as a backup for data communication has become highly risky. We recommend deactivating the data ID for F77 and using it only for backup telephone and fax services. For data communication backups, consider using FBB150 or Iridium.
Please refer to the attached risk assessment report regarding F77.
If you have any questions about your vessel’s data communication infrastructure or setting up backup lines, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
