Dear Valued Customers,
We hope this message finds you well.
Microsoft will end support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. Since many shipboard PCs still use Windows 7, we have compiled key points for addressing this change. Please review the information below.
1.What happens when support ends?
Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for Windows 7 after January 14, 2020. This means that any new security vulnerabilities or attack methods discovered after this date will not be addressed, leaving systems at risk.
2.Will all Windows 7 PCs immediately become unusable?
No, the operating system will continue to function. It will not stop working after the support end date, and it is not a license violation to continue using it. However, the lack of security updates makes it vulnerable.
3.How to upgrade to Windows 10?
Microsoft offers an upgrade program via the internet, but this requires:
・A verified PC
・An internet connection (at least 4G)
・All software and peripherals must be compatible with Windows 10
Given these requirements, upgrading existing shipboard Windows 7 PCs directly may be impractical. The more realistic solution is to procure new Windows 10 PCs and replace the existing Windows 7 PCs. Ensure all operational software and peripherals are compatible with Windows 10 before making the switch.
4.Should all shipboard Windows 7 PCs be upgraded to Windows 10?
Ideally, yes, but it is essential to consider compatibility and costs. For example, many loading software applications were developed for Windows 7 and may not be guaranteed to work on Windows 10. Ensure that all maritime-specific software and peripherals are compatible before upgrading. It is recommended to maintain the current setup for low-risk, non-internet-connected administrative PCs to avoid unnecessary costs.
5.Which PCs should be upgraded?
We recommend the following guidelines:
(1) PCs that should be upgraded to Windows 10:
・PCs used for web access to obtain meteorological and oceanographic information
・PCs used for e-commerce
・PCs that connect to external networks via VPN
・PCs used to access news websites
・Any other PCs that require web access for business operations
(2) PCs that do not urgently need upgrading:
・PCs used only for email
・PCs used for administrative tasks like Word/Excel
・Loading PCs
・PCs not connected to a network
・Any other PCs that do not require web access for business operations
If you are uncertain about whether to upgrade a particular PC, please feel free to consult us.
How long can you continue using Windows 7 PCs that are not upgraded?
Generally, the lifespan of shipboard PCs is 5-6 years. As software and peripherals increasingly require Windows 10, a transition will eventually be necessary. It is recommended to replace existing Windows 7 PCs with Windows 10 PCs as they reach the end of their useful life.
