Writing this for your note. In a recent cyber security inspection, there was a case of pointed “measures against instantaneous power failure
of vessels’ IT equipment”.
Vessels’ generators give power to IT devices though, power is shut down instantaneously at following timing, and it is cause of damage sometimes .

A UPS can help for measures in these situations, but not all equipment needs a UPS.
In general, the necessity of UPS installation is designed based on the risk assessment during the construction of the vessel’s network. Therefore, it is not obligatory to specify the criteria necessity of UPS in SMS Manuals.
However, if the SMS Manual is requested to specify the criteria, please refer to the following criterion.
Operational Technology (OT)
In general, manufacturers decide necessity of UPS, and the necessary
equipment is already installed. The shipowner does not need to take
any additional measures.
Information Technology (IT)
(1) Laptops
Laptops do not require UPS as they have built-in batteries.
(2) Desktop PCs
Desktop PCs are vulnerable with instantaneous power failure and
require a UPS.
For PCs that are not important for business, UPS can be omitted,
but in that case, it is recommended writing in a risk assessment record.
(3) Intelligent router
(e.g., carrier router such as ORiON Plus, Infinity, Xchange, etc.)
Intelligent routers that manage the onboard network and upstream
communications require UPS.
(In the case of ORiON Plus, UPS is installed basically.)
(4) NAS and data servers
These devices stock important data and require a UPS.
(5) HUBs, WiFi-APs
They will reboot when instantaneous power failure happens, and in
general theory, UPS is not necessary.
(6) Printers and peripheral devices
In general theory, UPS is not necessary.
